This Project…
The aim of this project is to provide a visual presentation of the Rock Art sites in Zimbabwe, and it seeks to find a way to engage with people from different parts of the world who are interested in cultural heritage. In addition, this is an academic archive for researchers in related fields providing references and further readings for the topic on rock art sites.
Rock Art is a window into the minds and worlds of past societies. For anthropologists, they are time machines, offering clues about how early societies lived, what they believed, and how they made sense of the universe around them. Rock art works hand in hand with heritage structures and artefacts recovered from archaeological excavations providing a deeper explanation on social and economic practices of the ancient societies.
I hardly hear people say, 'let’s go check out rock art sites!' Mostly, people go to visit the major heritage places highly advertised by the countries (which you usually pay for entry). I am not saying these places are not worth paying the fee, I am simply saying there is a lot more you can see in an area rather than the big places. In Harare for example, apart from seeing the capital city and the game park, rock art sites can provide a deeper cultural experience. These sites are also located within caves and shelters which provides hiking experience and aesthetic views of the terrane.
